Laulua Rum and Coca Cola aina ihmettelin, että mikä tämä oikein on, mutta löytyi sille historia etsimällä, helpostikin, Wikipediasta. Olipa kerran martiniquelainen laulu nuoresta tytöstä, joka myi itseään Trinidadin kaduilla. Trinidadilainen Lionel Belasco teki siitä oman calypsoversionsa nimeltä L'année Passée (mennyt vuosi), missä lauletaan siitä kuinka tyttö vuosi sitten oli vielä lapsi äitinsä hoivissa, mutta nyt kadulla:

1943 Trinidadiin oli sodan takia sijoitettuna amerikkalaisia sotilaita, ja katsellessaan heidän mesoamistaan paikallisten naisten kanssa trinidadilainen calypsomestari Lord Invader (Rupert Grant) käytti melodiaa pohjana omalle laululleen. Sen nimi  Rum and Coca-Cola tulee siitä, että amerikkalaiset sotilaat lantrasivat romminsa kolalla, mitä paikalliset eivät tehneet.

Amerikkalainen laulaja Morey Amsterdam puolestaan vei laulun Yhdysvaltoihin, missä siisti sanoja jonkin verran, sekä julkaisi sen omissa nimissään - tai melodian osalta muissa nimissä; tarina on epäselvä. Andrews Sisters levytti sen, ja siitä tuli 1945 valtaisa hitti Yhdysvalloissa. Belasco ja Lord Invader kävivät myöhemmin vuosia oikeutta tekijänoikeuksista, ja ne lopulta palautettiin heille.
